Hotel near Siam Square

Siam Square is where Bangkok goes to shop without a shopping mall. Laid out as a grid of low-rise lanes opposite the Siam interchange, it is louder, cheaper, and more improvised than the malls across the road. Mercure Bangkok Siam Ratchathewi sits one BTS stop north at 199 Phaya Thai Road, which makes it a practical base for anyone wanting a hotel near Siam Square without paying interchange prices.

Siam Square

How far is Siam Square from the hotel?

One stop on the BTS Sukhumvit Line, roughly three minutes of travel time from Ratchathewi to Siam. The hotel connects to the station at Exit 4, so guests reach the platform without crossing traffic. From Siam station, Siam Square begins immediately on the south side of the tracks.

The walk is about twenty minutes down Phaya Thai Road. Because Siam Square is best explored on foot anyway, many guests walk one way and take the train back when they are carrying bags.

What makes Siam Square different

The malls around the interchange sell international brands at international prices. Siam Square sells Thai street fashion, independent labels, tailoring, secondhand books and food, mostly from small units run by their owners. Prices drop sharply the further from the main road you walk.

It is also a student district. Chulalongkorn University sits directly behind it, which keeps the area young, busy in the late afternoon and full of cheap, good food. Buskers and dance crews perform in the open squares most evenings.

Our guide to Siam Square breaks down the lanes block by block.

Siam Square One and the covered section

Siam Square One, the modern open-sided complex beside the station, is the easiest entry point. It holds food courts, karaoke, cinemas and a mix of local brands across several terraced levels, and is the part of the district that stays comfortable in the rain. The older lanes behind it are where the character is.

Rooms for a Siam shopping trip

New Hotel in Bangkok

Rooms are designed for guests who are out from morning until late. The Classic Queen and Classic Twin each run to 26 square metres, and the Junior Suite to 52 square metres with a separate living area for families or longer stays. See the range on our accommodation page, or read why the property works as a 4 star hotel in Bangkok for longer trips.

Eating around Siam Square

Food is one of the main reasons to come. The lanes hold noodle shops, grilled pork and sticky rice stalls, dessert counters and air-conditioned cafes aimed at students. Portions are small and prices low, which suits grazing across several stops rather than sitting down to one meal.

Back at the hotel, The Wandering Elephant serves all-day international and Thai dishes, and the Infinity Pool Bar offers lighter plates in the evening.

Combining Siam Square with the malls

Siam Paragon

Most guests do both in a day. Siam Paragon, Siam Center and Siam Discovery sit on the north side of the tracks, connected by walkways, while Siam Square is on the south. Crossing takes two minutes via the skywalk. Our article on staying at a hotel near Siam Paragon covers the mall side in detail.

Getting there step by step

Hotel near BTS Ratchathewi

Leave the hotel and enter BTS Ratchathewi at Exit 4. Take the Sukhumvit Line one stop southbound towards Kheha and alight at Siam. Use the south exits, follow the skywalk down into Siam Square One, and the lanes open up behind it. The return journey reverses the same route.

If train access is central to your plans, our article on finding a hotel near the BTS Skytrain sets out how the network connects.

The wider neighbourhood

Ratchathewi itself rewards a wander. Pratunam Market is ten minutes on foot, the Jim Thompson House sits near National Stadium one stop west, and the Airport Rail Link terminates at Phaya Thai one stop north. More on the district in our article on choosing a hotel in Ratchathewi.

Chulalongkorn and Samyan on foot

Samyan Mitrtown

Walk south through Siam Square and the lanes open into the Chulalongkorn University campus, one of the largest green spaces in central Bangkok and pleasant in the early morning. Beyond it lies Samyan, a district that has kept its market roots while gaining a modern mall and a cinema. Samyan Mitrtown runs late, with a 24-hour section that is useful for guests arriving on night flights.

The whole walk from Siam Square to Samyan takes about twenty-five minutes and passes through parts of the city most visitors never see. It also connects to the MRT at Sam Yan, which opens up Chinatown and the river without returning to Siam.

Practical tips for a first visit

Carry small notes, as many stalls do not take cards. Shade is limited in the open lanes, so late afternoon is kinder than midday. Fitting rooms are rare in the smaller units, and sizing runs smaller than European equivalents, so check measurements before buying. Bargaining is accepted at the street stalls but not inside Siam Square One.

Getting back to the hotel

The last BTS trains run around midnight, so guests staying out late in Siam Square should check the time before relying on the train. Taxis are plentiful on Rama I Road, and the fare back to Ratchathewi is short. Walking back up Phaya Thai Road is well lit and takes around twenty minutes, which many guests prefer after a long evening.
