centralwOrld

Lifestyle, leisure, and discovery meet in one extraordinary hotspot

centralwOrld is one of the largest lifestyle complexes in Southeast Asia, anchoring the Ratchaprasong junction where Rama I Road meets Ratchadamri. Shops, cinemas, restaurants and an open public square sit across nine floors and the plaza in front of them. From Mercure Bangkok Siam Ratchathewi it is two BTS stops, which makes it one of the easiest full days out from the hotel.

Getting to centralwOrld from the hotel

Take the BTS from Ratchathewi one stop south to Siam, then continue one more stop east to Chit Lom. From Chit Lom the skywalk runs directly into the complex at first-floor level, so you reach it without crossing traffic. Travel time is around six minutes.

Walking is realistic in cooler weather. The route runs down Phaya Thai Road and east along Rama I, roughly 1.5 kilometres and about twenty minutes, passing Siam Square on the way.

What is inside

The complex spreads across nine retail floors. Lower levels carry international fashion and beauty, mid-levels Thai brands, electronics and homeware, and upper floors dining and entertainment. A large department store occupies one wing, and a multiplex cinema sits near the top.

The scale is genuinely large, so it pays to decide what you came for before arriving rather than walking the whole building.

Dining

Food runs from a sizeable food hall through to full restaurants on the upper floors, covering Thai, Japanese, Korean and Western. The food hall is the better-value option and busiest between noon and two. Restaurant floors stay open later than the shops.

The square and the countdown

The open plaza in front of the complex is one of the few large public spaces in central Bangkok, and it is used constantly for concerts, product launches, seasonal markets and installations. At the end of December it becomes the centre of Bangkok’s New Year countdown, drawing enormous crowds.

If you are in the city over New Year, this is the event most visitors want to see, and staying two BTS stops away means you can leave when you choose rather than waiting for traffic to clear.

Around Ratchaprasong

The junction holds more than one mall. Gaysorn sits across the road with luxury labels, Central Embassy is a short walk east, and Big C opposite is where locals buy snacks and household goods at normal prices.

The Erawan Shrine stands at the corner of the junction and is worth the few minutes it takes. It is an active shrine rather than a monument, busy with worshippers throughout the day, with resident dancers performing for those who have made offerings.

When to go

Weekday afternoons are calmest. Weekends are busy from late morning, and the square can be crowded whenever an event is running. Shops keep standard mall hours; the restaurant and cinema floors run later.

During the rainy season the skywalk connection from Chit Lom matters, as it keeps you under cover from the station to the door.

Combining it with the rest of your day

Ratchaprasong works naturally with Siam. One BTS stop separates them and the skywalk connects most of the way, so Siam Paragon, Siam Center and centralwOrld can be covered in a single day on foot once you are up on the walkway system.
